Dr. Michele Regalla and Antonio Emanuel accompanied students in TSL 540, Cultural Diversity in Education, on a study abroad trip to Atenas, Costa Rica.  There, ODU students had a service learning experience at Green Valley School, teaching English in an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) context. The students at Green Valley have content classes in English and Spanish, which equips them with conversational and academic language in both languages.  The ODU students also completed an immersion-style Spanish language course, giving them firsthand experience in navigating the kind of struggles that ESL students in the U. S. are faced with every day. And on the weekends, they traveled to some popular tourist destinations, including the capital city of San Jose, Arenal Volcano, and Manuel Antonio National Park. In addition to admiring the beautiful flora and fauna of Costa Rica, these students gained valuable insight into another culture and into the process of language acquisition.
